Female Rugby Sevens Tournament

Our Female Rugby Sevens Team is made up of ten Year 11 students and four Year 12 students. This equates to a very youthful team, given they played in an Under 19 Competition. Many have only just begun playing this sport and have adapted and developed an exceptional skill set so quickly. In fact, for six players, it was their first ever time playing. Our team were sensational ambassadors for our school.

We were prepared for our most difficult game, defending champions Tauranga Girls’ College. We started poorly being down 12-0, within a short time, however, we were hanging in. The hooter had sounded for full-time and we were losing, 17-19, Tauranga Girls’ were in possession and made an error, then turn-over, via a penalty and we score, winning 22-19. The team were ecstatic and rightfully so. The smiles were miles long. This one result made the whole day.

Importantly, our valiant young women were humble and dignified in victory and our opposition equally gracious in defeat. This one game was a wonderful example of the highs and lows of sport.

The remaining games were, loss, draw and loss, resulting in our side being placed middle of the pack by tournament end. This is an incredible result given such a youthful side.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our players and you, their Whanau and Parents for supporting your daughter. They represented our school, in the community, proudly. A big thanks to Jeff Robb too, who helps me coach this team. We certainly acknowledge his time and effort and the positive influence he brings to our great team. - Richard Brown.

Oteora Pest Trapping

On Wednesday 28th October, the Ōtūmoetai College Environment Committee went to our school camp area, Oteora, to help catch forest pests.

We teamed up with the Bay Conservation Alliance https://www.bayconservation.nz/ and worked hard taking wooden rat boxes to allocated spots along several transect lines through some tangled forest.

We then replenished our school Good Nature traps https://goodnature.co.nz/

The counters on the traps showed a number of rats had been successfully killed since we were last there.

Many thanks to Brian and Emma, from the Trust, for a very informative day.

Pen Recycling

Ōtūmoetai College Environment Committee joined the Terracycle Writing Instruments Recycling Program last year and have already sent away a box of pens in July this year.

We have just shipped our second lot of recycling - two boxes that include 248 whiteboard markers.

The used pens are collected in jars in classrooms and also, the college is an official pen recycling centre so people can drop off used pens to include in the next round of recycling.
