SCHOOL BALL

On May 20th one of the College’s major social events took place at Baypark. Our Senior Ball was a great success and was the culmination of much hard work by the Special Occasions Committee and Staff.

Following the theme of Narnia, ball guests were met with a wardrobe entrance way. As they emerged from this they were greeted with a Narnia scene involving a Lion, lamp posts, snow covered trees and dry ice.
Combined with awesome blue lighting, a ton of fairy lights, snowflakes and lanterns; the scene wowed all who attended.

The DJ’s made a huge effort for the school and the large crowd danced the night away from start to finish.

Thanks to all involved, especially waitresses, staff who attended, the Special Occasions Committee, and others who pitched in and helped.

Can’t wait ‘til the next one!

MASH UP COMPETITION

Best Revenue Model     Team: SeaBreathe

We made an alternative product to scuba tanks - the ocean is your tank!

This is what Pascal the organiser said to them:

“You were superb and your ability to demonstrate the size of the market, across the world, and then to settle on the local market to start with a prototype was just genius.
The Judges were impressed with what you demonstrated and how you came to it.
The mentors all said you were totally focussed and awesome to work with as you took on the advice as it came.”

Amazing given this Year 9 Team Oliver Annan, Alexander Annan (Oliver’s twin) and Isaac Miller (all Year 9 students at OTC) and their friend Cesar, took the initiative to enter the competition by themselves, and winning the “Best Revenue Model”.

SENIOR MODEL UNITED NATIONS

On Saturday the 27th of May, two teams from Otumoetai College participated in the Senior Model United Nations Mock Security Council (Bay of Plenty Region) which was held at the Tauranga City Council Chambers.

Around 20 teams from as far away as Taupo were represented. The issue being debated was the question of Nuclear Weapons and Research.
Our teams were:
Iran:
Ben Kennerley (Year 12)
Carys Robson (Year 13)
William Raisbeck (Year 13)

United Kingdom (all Year 11):
Zoe Macintyre
Madi Mackenzie
Makayla Wadsworth

In addition, Brooke Harris (Year 13) was brilliant as co-chair of the event for the day.
Only one of the six Otumoetai College students had competed in a MUNA event before, but they rose to the occasion wonderfully.
Team Iran ended up coming second equal. They were commended on their research skills and knowledge of Iranian politics, international relations and attitudes towards the nuclear issue.
The judges said the difference between the top three teams was minuscule and it was a very difficult decision to make.
