Ed's Fight Continues

Otumoetai College staff are continuing with their fundraising efforts to enable Ed Weston to afford the medication that he needs to stay alive.

While over $30,000 has been raised so far, a further instalment of $15,000 dollars is due to the drug company at the beginning of March. If this payment is not made, Ed will no longer continue to receive the last treatment option available to him, a non-funded drug, Ibutrinib which comes at a mind-blowing cost of $7500 per month.

Ed, until recently a beloved Teacher at Otumoetai College, is battling an aggressive form of cancer - Mantle Cell Lymphoma. In September last year, he was informed that his life expectancy would probably not extend much beyond Christmas 2018.  Thankfully, at that time there was one last treatment option available to Ed, Ibutrinib. So far, it appears that this drug is making a significance difference to Ed’s medical situation.

Ed’s quality of life has vastly improved and his optimism continues to shine brighter every day. He has much more energy and has been able to spend time with loved ones. Ed has even started cooking, listening to classical music, painting and reading again.

Ed and his family greatly appreciate the enormous contribution everyone has made towards funding this lifeline. However, Otumoetai staff are aware that the amount raised so far only funds Ed’s treatment for four and a half months.
Every little bit helps!

Outward Bound School Holiday Courses

Outward Bound New Zealand is a not for profit organisation offering outdoor experiential learning courses to New Zealanders young and old. Courses are run from their school in Anakiwa in the Marlborough Sounds.

We have two courses coming up in the April School Holidays:

  • Our School Leaders course is offered once a year to current school leaders aged 16-18 years during the April school holidays. The course is aimed at building teen resilience in a fun and healthy environment and connecting young leaders across the country. Places are limited and potential students need to provide evidence of their leadership position.
  • Leaps & Bounds is the ultimate shared adventure for parents/caregiver and their teen (13-15 years). The 8 day course provides a challenging but supportive environment for teens and their parents to develop and strengthen their relationship without any of the usual digital distractions.
