Beach Volleyball:

We started the year off with 58 students competing at the National Secondary Schools Beach Volleyball championship at Mount Maunganui Beach in scorching 30 degree heat.

Within that group we had 12 students that are year nine this year and had not even been to school yet or played in a Beach Volleyball tournament before and they all did incredibly well with Emma Searle and Tiana Rae finishing 3rd.
Our top year 10 girls were Lucy Lloyd and Ella Douglas who finished 4th in division one.

In the Boys, our year 9’s had to compete against the year 10’s as there were only three teams entered. It wasn’t easy for the boys but they did very well.
In the year 11 boys our top team of Nico Brown and Jacksyn Runga finished 6th overall.
Jaylon Paki and Rhys Howard were our top senior boys team finishing 5th in a very talented division, senior boys was also the biggest division.

The highlight of the weekend was our senior girls paring of Rose Akkerman and Larissa Meads. The girls looked extremely classy and played some very tidy volleyball both days. The girls won both their quarter and semi final 2-0 and both were quite convincing. Going into the final the girls were up against St Andrews College who had also looked very classy. The girls looked to be in control from the start of the game winning the first set 21-13, they went down in the second 19,21 but made minimal mistakes and out classed their opposition 15-9 in the final set. The girls are now the National Secondary Schools Beach Volleyball Champions.

Congratulations to Rose Akkerman who has also been named in the NZ u19 Beach Volleyball team.

Rowing:

Over the summer our Rowers have been hard at work training and competing in their club events. Their last regatta was the North Island Club Champs where the Tauranga Rowing Club had a record 20 medal crews.

The top results from our students were:

Rhianna Loughnan & Emma Averill - SILVER Womens Club Coxed Eight

Rhianna Loughnan & Emma Averill - BRONZE Womens Club Coxed Four

Emma Averill - BRONZE Womens U16 single scull

Chloe Wright, Jenna Brangywnne, Nina Turner, Sarah Laban-Ten Dam - BRONZE Womens U15 Four

Mitchell McGrath - GOLD Mens Intermediate Octuple Sculls

Synchronized Swimming:

Sophie Black and Chloe Boyt were  part of the New Zealand Pikopiko Team (15 & under) that competed at the Asia Pacific Open in Malaysia in early December. The synchronised swimming team, which included eleven athletes from around New Zealand including Sophie and Chloe, won silver medals for both the 15 & under Team and Combination team events. 2019 was the first year Chloe and Sophie have been part of the high performance team, and the Asia Pacific Open was the first time they represented New Zealand internationally in the sport. Both girls have also been selected for the 2020 NZ Pikopiko Squad.

Tennis:

Congratulations to the following students that have made the western BOP Tennis teams in their respective age groups Angus Colquhoun, Macy Donaghy and Hannah Walpole. These students play in an inter-regional competition. All three were selected for the tournament based on their current singles and doubles ranking.
